Welcome to the Communication for Development Masters programme and the course start guide for the Autumn 2018 term (September 3rd, 2018 – January 18th, 2019).
You will find a time table for the course start so you can plan your participation. You will also find information on when you can register for the programme and your courses, how you can access login information for our online learning platform and other important IT services at Malmö University. The page is divided into sections that contain information for students at different stages in the ComDev programme. Find “your” information below. New students Autumn 2018

Students starting the Communication for Development programme in autumn 2018 will begin their first semester with the Media, Globalization and Development Course (KK620C). On this course you will also meet students who started their studies in spring 2018 and have already completed one semester of the programme.

There are 3 important steps you have to do before your course start on Monday, September 3rd

Step 1. Get your login information for Malmö University’s IT systems (from August 6th)  

Use this link https://idservice.mah.se/RequestUserID.aspx to request your Malmö University Computer Identity (username and password). It is important that you request your username and password as soon as you can because without this you cannot access Canvas or Live Lecture the ComDev online learning platforms. If you have questions regarding your Malmö University username and password you should contact IT Support email: support@mau.se 

Step 2. Course registration – Opens August 27th (deadline September 2ond)

Go to Ladok student and follow the instructions and complete your registration. Login with your computer ID and register. You need to register for the first course, Media, Globalization and Development Course (KK620C).

IMPORTANT! Please register as soon as possible! It normally takes 1 or 2 days for the different systems to sync so this means you may have to wait a day or two after your online registration before you can access the MGD course site in Canvas.

Step 3. Log into Canvas

You should make sure you have access to canvas before the official course start on Monday, September 3rd. On the Canvas course site you will find the course timeline, instructions about assignments and a detailed reading list. Login to Canvas http://canvas.mau.se  and explore the course site. Use the link on this site (see menu to the right) or from www.mau.se  Use the open forum to say hello to your fellow students.

Additional Information:

You will find additional information for new students on the Malmö University web-site here https://www.mau.se/english/Student/New-student/  this information is primarily for students studying campus-based courses but it is worth familiarizing yourself with the academic environment at Malmö University. Student rights & obligations is another important area to explore as these may differ from previous academic systems you may have encountered previously.

Monday, September 3rd – COURSE START

Thursday, September 6th 13:00-16:00 local Swedish time (unless stated explicitly otherwise times for lectures, submission deadlines etc. are stated in Swedish time) – ONLINE COURSE INTRODUCTION.

This is an online session in Live Lecture. You will find the live lecture link on the Canvas course site (left hand menu). Live Lecture is a very important part of the ComDev teaching environment. Live Lecture is a live video streaming application with integrated text chat. This is where you will participate in online lectures and seminars. Please take some time to read more about Live Lecture here in the Live Lecture Information.

If you wish to attend in person you can join us in the Glocal Classroom C0502 Niagara building, opposite the ‘C’ elevators. This is ComDev’s dedicated teaching room and most regular classroom teaching will take place in this room.

Online Lecture: Oscar Hemer – Globalization and Communication: Conviviality.

Participate online using Live Lecture or join us in the Glocal Classroom C0502 Niagara.

Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd September – Media, Globalization and Development two-day Seminar (09:30 – 17:00 local Swedish time)

This is the first seminar of the Media, Globalization and Development course. There will be two days of lectures, discussions and presentations from ComDev staff and guest lecturers.

If you live reasonably close by (i.e. in Europe) we are looking forward to welcoming you to Malmö in person. If you are unable to come to Malmö then you can follow live online and participate in lectures and discussions using the LIVE LECTURE video streaming and text chat function.

IMPORTANT  Malmö University has changed learning platform from It’s learning to Canvas.

Students on term 2 and 3, Media, Globalization and Development and New Media, ICT and Development will use Canvas. Login at http://canvas.mau.se

Term 4 students, Degree Project will stay on Its learning for the last term. https://mah.itslearning.com/elogin/

Please make sure that you have completed your registration well before the course start so that you can access Canvas or Its learning and visit your course site.

For your second semester you will study Media, Globalization and Development Course Code KK620C.

You will study your third semester on the programme with courses New Media, ICT and Development (NMICT&DEV) Course Code KK622C and Research Methodology Course Code KK623C.
Important! Register for BOTH for NMICT&DEV and RM when you complete your course registration in August.

ONLINE COURSE INTRODUCTION New Media, ICT and Development (Live Lecture) Thursday 6th September 10:00 – 12:00 local Swedish time

The introduction is an online session and will be streamed via LIVE LECTURE.

Research Methodology (KK623C)

New Media, ICT & Development is taught in first part of the semester (first 10 weeks). In the second half (10 weeks) of this autumn semester you will study Research Methodology (RM) Course Code KK623C from November 2018.

Students who started spring 2017 – Semester 4

Continuing with your fourth semester and the Degree Project (DP) Course Code KK624C

Communication for Development: Advances in Social Action, Planning and Evaluation (KK625B)

Communication for Development: Advances in Social Action, Planning and Evaluation (ACfD) is part of the ComDev 2 year MA programme and also taught as an independent course (20 weeks, part-time 50%) the course starts on September 3rd. Log in to the course site at http://canvas.mau.se

Communication for Development: Specialisation Course (KD627A)

Communication for Development: Specialisation Course is also a part of the ComDev 2 year Masters MA programme (20 weeks, part-time 50%) . The course is student-driven. It uses a ‘convergence pedagogy’, which combines live online teaching and resources with intensive in situ seminars and workshops. The course starts on September 3rd. Log in to the course site at http://canvas.mau.se

The course literature and other teaching materials are selected by the student and approved by the supervisor.
