Opportunity: Science Communications Intern with CGIAR in Colombia

“Seeking a young scientist with a flair for storytelling to work with CCAFS Theme 1 Long-Term Adaptation to Climate Change. The application is open until the position has been filled

The production of top-notch research is not the end of the story. CCAFS is also looking for a talented communicator to bring that research to the wider research community and the general public. Applicants for this opening may come from a broad range of fields, although ideal candidates will have a demonstrated talent for science writing and an academic or professional background related to  CCAFS Theme 1 areas of interest.


  • Organize and streamline existing AMKN content.

  • Edit, clean and publish appropriate content for AMKN using various online platforms and solicit content submissions from relevant sources.

  • Collate information from all Theme 1 outputs (reports, publications, briefs, datasets, photos, tools, etc.) and current projects and select appropriate material for use on AMKN in coordination with CCAFS team members.

  • Work closely with technical team to improve visual and functional aspects of the AMKN website.

  • Prepare monthly Theme 1 update for CCAFS coordinating unit, collecting input from science officer, project leaders etc.

  • Communicate regularly with CCAFS coordinating unit on Theme 1 outputs and communications strategy; participate in monthly communications meeting.

  • Produce blog stories, briefs, and other communications materials related to Theme 1 activities and outputs.

  • Promote CCAFS research via traditional and social media channels.

  • Manage Theme 1 elements on the CCAFS website.

  • Coordinate with other CCAFS and CIAT communicators to share, translate and expand the reach of communications materials.

  • Support annual evaluation and reporting for Theme 1 online information portals.

Required profile:
  • Currently enrolled in a college or university in pursuit of a Master’s degree, recently graduated or otherwise affiliated with an institution of higher education or research.

  • Excellent spoken and written English.

Desired profile:
  • Familiarity with online tools such as WordPress and CCAFS social media outlets, including blogs, Youtube, Flickr, Twitter and Facebook.

  • Background in agriculture, environmental science, biology, conservation, geography, rural development, sociology, anthropology, political science, economics or related field.

  • Experience in scientific research and publication.

  • Ability to communicate complex scientific topics to a general audience and to synthesize a wide variety of concepts in a written format.

  • Independent and proactive individual that works well with minimal supervision.

  • Proficiency in a second language, particularly Spanish or French.

Terms of Employment

The contract will be for a period of 6 months with the possibility of extension. This is a paid position based at CIAT headquarters in Cali, Colombia. Reimbursement includes lunches on the CIAT campus and medical insurance for the duration of the appointment. The candidate will report to the CCAFS Theme 1 Science Officer.
