As much as I am eager to share Mike Shoag’s inspiring blog post Can Social Media Help Developing Countries? Absolutely! I feel the urge to do so with a disclaimer.
Social media enthusiasts in general, and development bloggers in particular, often forget to remind their readers (and themselves?) about the disconnect between the privilege social media users and the reality of the excluded others.
While blogs have a great potential to be both inclusive and participatory for the benefit of positive development in the world, the truth is that the majority of groups outside of the wired global elite are excluded from this conversation.
Thus, I call for you – fellow privileged members of the wired elite – to discuss with us this very relevant question raised by Ryann Elizabeth Manning in her article FollowMe.IntDev.Com – International Development in the Blogosphere:
Does the blogosphere (including our blog!) contribute to more open sharing of knowledge and help democratize development discourse, or simply provide a new platform for already dominant perspectives, or some combination of both?
